About Us

The movies we love reveal the way God designed us.

Today's movies are modern day fairy tales, and the best ones reveal truth about who we are.

J.R.R. Tolkien said, "All fairy tales echo the gospel of Jesus Christ." C.S. Lewis added, "The heart of Christianity is a myth which is also a fact." Even Joseph Campbell agrees that all great stories, myths, share the same themes. And although we tend to associate myth as make believe, it’s technically a story that explains where we came from, and usually has supernatural occurrences during the story. Sounds like the Bible to me. The reason stories engage our hearts is they reveal the fabric of our very being. As Morgan Snyder says, “Desire reveals design. And design reveals our destiny.” Stories matter because our hearts matter.

C.S. Lewis: "We make men without chests and expect from them virtue and enterprise. We laugh at honor and are shocked to find traitors in our midst." And Morgan Snyder writes, “The story of most men is being entrusted with power and having that power bring harm to themselves and those under their care.” In a culture that calls masculinity “toxic,” how can we find a way to discover what is true? How can men unearth the virtue, honor, and strength to navigate our world? We have these role models in the movies that move us to emulate, encourage, and emphasize. We watch how these characters respond to crisis, wounding, temptation, failure, and success in order to figure out how to handle these same situations in our lives.

At Men at the Movies, we discuss the movies we love and why we love them. We discover what these modern parables say about who we were created to be. Our hearts reveal a roadmap to our design, and the movies that resonate most are worthy of examination to identify the truth about the men our world needs, the men God designed us to become.

Join us as we discover the God’s truth in the movies we love.

Meet the Hosts

Paul McDonald

Paul McDonald is still trying to figure out what he wants to do when he grows up. Although he has worked as a nurse for over 20 years, his passion is teaching and seeing people grow. He and his wife live in Charlotte, NC with their four children, two grandchildren, and two dogs. They enjoy pursuing adventure together, whether in the form of a day trip to the mountains or going on medical mission trips to Uganda (he wrote a book about their first trip: Called to Follow). Paul is passionate about pursuing the hearts of the people around him, and sharing the transformational power of the gospel that changed his life. He is frequently found sitting by the firepit in his backyard, preferably with a tasty beverage in his hand. He loves reading, spending time with his family, having and recording amazing conversations, turning pens at his workbench, or fly fishing up in the mountains.

Where you can find him:

Britt Mooney

Britt Mooney has been a missionary to Korea and traveled around the world to minister with his amazing wife. Now back in the US, he works for Phoenix Roasters, a missional coffee company, and has planted a church. An author of fiction and non-fiction, you can check out his podcast Kingdom Over Coffee and his latest book SAY YES: How God-Sized Dreams Take Flight is available on Amazon and other major outlets online. He lives on a God adventure in Suwanee, GA with his wife and three great kids.

Where you can find him:

Patrick Creehan

Patrick Creehan is old. Like...real old. He’s been leading men’s groups since the last millennium. Currently, he and his wife and their three, wait, no, four kids live in Waxhaw, NC with their two dogs. He spends most of his time working as an engineering manager for a large software company you never heard of and dreaming about ways to make bourbon drinking during the work day not taboo. He’s a member of Stitchfix, a couple wine clubs, and probably still BMG’s Music CD club.

When he’s not watching movies or TV in general, he’s surfing the browse screen looking for a movie or show to watch. When there’s literally nothing good to watch, he hangs out with neighbors, friends, and Paul and Ricky...and loves every minute of it.

Ricky Furr

Ricky Furr befriended Paul McDonald long before the idea of Men at the Movies was even a thought. He met Paul during a Mission Uprising Outpost, where they experienced the transformational power of the gospel. Their friendship grew out of a desire to see other men come to life and become the man that God made them to be. Wednesday night campfires at Patrick Creehan's house, blizzard hikes in the middle of May and monthly family dinners have served to strengthen their bond with each other and with God.

Ricky enjoys camping and kayaking with his wife Rebecca and daughter Zoe. When he's not watching a movie for the Podcast or spending time with his family, he leads a weekly Men's Group (around a campfire) or he can be found enjoying a glass of bourbon or whiskey with cigar.
