Inception with Paul McDonald and Britt Mooney

Coming up on the Men at the Movies podcast, we’re discussing Inception once again. This time, Britt and I are diving into the power of the themes of this movie. Ideas are resilient, contagious, and can define us. Our moments of shame and regret act as entry points for our enemy to infect us with lies. But if we reject the lie and replace it with the truth, we live in freedom. Join us as we discover God’s truth in this move.

Quotes

  • Not knowing is a terrible place to be.

  • Once we realize we are agreeing with a lie, we can break that agreement and live in truth.

  • As you start in spiritual warfare, you’re going to start pretty basic.

  • The battle is in my mind, but it’s for my heart.

  • At some point with the lies, we take ownership of it and lie to ourselves.

  • In order to plant the idea, they first learn his weaknesses.

  • Our moments of shame are our weak spots, portals of entry where the enemy can infect us.

  • When you believe a lie, you’re going to act in such a way to make others believe lies as well.

  • The ideas we believe take root and produce fruit.

 Themes

  • Movie as a playbook of the enemy’s plans, how he plants ideas in our heads that doubt God and our identity

  • The power of ideas and how the enemy lies to us

    • Ideas are resilient and contagious. They can define us or destroy us.

    • The enemy tries to plant ideas in our minds and have us accept them as our own. He whispers an idea in our mind that we think is our own, and we take it and run with it.

    • The battle is in our minds, but it’s for our hearts.

    • The enemy lives for division.

    • He takes a desire that is good, and plants ideas of fear, doubt, and anxiety.

    • The enemy looks for a weak spot, insecure areas. Scenes of regret/shame that we replay in our minds are weak spots, portals of entry.

    • He will manufacture situations to manifest fears in order to introduce the lie.

  • How to win the battles in our minds

    • Replace the lie with the truth.

    • Ask yourself, “How did I get here?”

    • Ask for God’s interpretation

    • Submit to God and his truth

  • 4 stages of competence

    • Unconscious incompetence: You don’t know what you don’t know

    • Conscious incompetence: You know what you don’t know

    • Conscious competence: You know what you need to do, but have to think about doing what you’re doing, structured, rigid

    • Unconscious competence: You do what you do without thinking; it becomes instinctive; ninja level

  • “When you forgive this man, I forgive him, too. And when I forgive whatever needs to be forgiven, I do so with Christ’s authority for your benefit, so that Satan will not outsmart us. For we are familiar with his evil schemes.” - 2 Corinthians 2:10-11 (NLT)

  • “If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking.” - James 1:5 (NLT)

  • “I am the true grapevine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch of mine that doesn’t produce fruit, and he prunes the branches that do bear fruit so they will produce even more. You have already been pruned and purified by the message I have given you. Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me. Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing.” - John 15:1-5 (NLT)

Questions

  • What level of competence do you find yourself in regarding spiritual warfare?

  • When you have a fight/conflict with someone, how is the battle in your mind? How is it for your heart?

  • What lies do you find yourself agreeing with?
